League One 2013-14 Preview from the fans, Part 2: Walsall and Notts County

Evening all,

Well it only seems like yesterday that Yeovil defeated Brentford to close the 2012-13 League One season - well 57 days to be exact. But already the ball has started rolling for the beginning of the new 2013-14 League One season.

And as part of my build up  for a new season where i will be covering as many of the Gillingham games as I physically can, I have recruited fans from all 24 clubs from League One and get their options for their clubs as the new season starts on August the 3rd.

Today we continue with looking at two sides from the east and the west midlands who had very indifferent seasons last time out in League One and both sides are looking for a better season this time around. I'm talking about Walsall and Notts County.

WALSALL

Name:   Andy Webster

Occupation away from supporting your club: Commercial Manager

How long have you been a supporter of Walsall and how did you start supporting them?

I have been a ‘proper’ supporter for about 10 years now, although my first game was a birthday ‘present’ from my dad in ’97(We lost 4-1 at home to BarnsleyI first started going regularly 2003/2004 season when I was brought my first season ticket, and I’ve never looked back since.

Let’s get this ball rolling:

What would be your Dream season?

Walsall to make the playoffs and beat Wolves in the final with a goal so offside you could see it from space.

And what will make it a Nightmare season for you?

Obviously being relegated, however I think if we were to lose our best player in Paterson and not replace them it puts us in the same boat as previous season and apathy ensues amongst our fans.
What is worrying we have now sold Paterson, I hope we can replace him adequately.

Our own fans think our team is…

One set of Supporters:   Well run a great club where people can make great fans.
Another set of supporters: Just a way for the chairman to line his pockets.

Other teams’ fans think our team is…

Tinpot.
That club you can see from the M6.
Similar clubs see us as a model club everyone should aim to be run like.

The new season:

How has Pre-Season been for you this time around?

At the time of writing we are being messed around by a ‘star’ (When I say star he had 4 good months and brought into his own hype) Febian Brandy imminently about to join Sheff Utd even though he wants to play in the Championship. True colours always shine through.
As for the rest, we are in better stead than previous seasons we have a good nucleus of player which were the driving force of last season, Adam Chambers and Andy Butler but to name two.

Have you got the right manager and how popular is he?

He has won round 90% of fans after a terrible run during the middle of last season. However there are the 10% of fans who think win % actually count for something.

Are there any new signings that you are excited about?

Milan Lalkovic, just signed on loan from Chelsea, looks as fast as Usain Bolt and pretty composed for a man of his years.

Name the player that you would happily drive to his next club (and pay for the taxi as well)...

We are fortunate enough to have got rid of all the ‘dead wood’ the back end of last season

Name an opposition player you despise...

Jamie O’hara, arrogance > His ability – You don’t drop to league one for any other reason than you’re cack.

Name an opposition player you would love to have at your club?

Kevin Phillips – Okay not really an opposition player but still would love him to come!

If I was to visit your club on an away trip this season, name one thing I must do in your town? (Can be anything, football-related or otherwise... from visiting a famous sight, to making sure you don’t park your car somewhere, to find a certain drink in a pub or a nice place to eat)

Walsall, in itself is a dump but there are a couple of things that you can do, depending on your interests.
-          Visit the Leather Museum – You can take a trip to our Leather Museum which gives a great insight to why we are called the saddlers!
-          Have a Curry – There are many curry houses in and around Walsall, however Five Rivers is a class above the rest!
-          Avoid – Goscote, Coldmore, Coalpool.

Onto other important matters:

You finished last season very strong, and just missed out on the playoffs last season due to the goals from Will Grigg, will it be difficult to continue the momentum into the new season?

I believe it will be with regard to scoring goals as I believe we will be missing Grigg et al for the start of the season. At the time of writing we haven’t replaced him, like for like, so it will be interesting to see who we bring in.

How important is it for your club that Will Grigg sign new long term contracts and stays at the club for the whole season?

Vital, however I believe he will be off to another club. Confirmed on the 1st July.

You have your local rivals Wolverhampton in the same division, how important is it that you do well against them?

Against them I would like the bragging rights, but providing we have a good solid season, I’m not that fussed. Wolves have embarrassed themselves enough already.

And now onto the really important stuff:

Who do you think will be the top 6 at the end of the season?

In no particular order;

Gillingham
Wolves
Sheffield United
Swindon
Brentford
Peterborough.

Who do you think will go down to League 2?

Shrewsbury
Port Vale
Coventry
Rotherham

And finally, in all honesty, where do you think you will finish this season?

Mid table – I can’t really comment because we haven’t signed anybody. But I would be happy with a flirt with the playoffs maybe 8th – 14th is a realistic aim.

NOTTS COUNTY

Name:  Graham Farquharson

Occupation away from supporting your club:  Salesman

How long have you been a supporter of Notts County and how did you start supporting them?

30 years now ever since my dad took me to my first game against Blackburn in 1981.

Let’s get this ball rolling:

What would be your Dream season?

The dream would be automatic promotion playing attractive football with lots of contributions from our home grown young players.

And what will make it a Nightmare season for you?

Ending up in a relegation battle with continual moaning from our supporters about the state of the club, the pitch, the manager etc

Our own fans think our team is…

This depends on whether they started supporting us before or after the Munto circus.  If after, they think we have a right to be in the top 6.  If before, they are happy for us to be solidly mid table, if (and it is a big if), we give young players a chance.

Other teams’ fans think our team is…

Dirty and one dimensional.  However, I think they will be in for a shock this season.

The new season:

How has Pre-Season been for you this time around?

We’ve had a good trip to Finland which has allowed us to integrate some of our new signings.  We played Galatasary in a glamour friendly at home and have games against Rayo Vallecano and Ipswich to follow.  All in all, some decent games.  We have also signed Mustapha Dumbuya and Danny Haynes which has definitely upped the level of anticipation about the coming season.

Have you got the right manager and how popular is he?

Chris Kiwomya took over last February and received a mixed reception with many thinking he was simply the cut price option for the club.  However, we have recruited a strong back room in pre-season with Mick Jones and Andy Walker joining this.  They will certainly give Kiwomya the support he did not have at the end of season.  The bigger issue is whether the board will support Kiwomya as they have been notoriously trigger happy in the past.

Are there any new signings that you are excited about?

Mustapha Dumbuya looks a good signing from Crawley, his ability to bomb down the right flank will certainly get the fans going.  We have also signed Danny Haynes from Charlton and he has got people excited.   To be honest, I’m not sure why.  His goal record isn’t that great and he has dodgy hamstrings but hopefully I’ll be proved wrong.

Name the player that you would happily drive to his next club (and pay for the taxi as well)...

No-one, it’s a new season and everyone starts with a clean slate.

Name an opposition player you despise...

No-one, there’s enough hate in the world without bringing it to football as well.

Name an opposition player you would love to have at your club?

This is a tricky one as I can’t think of anyone in League 1 who is head and shoulders above our players.  So many of the players who make a difference in League 1 are loanees from bigger clubs and they don’t count really.  Also, we have an excellent back 5 (one of the best defensive units in the League) so maybe a forward or a creative midfielder but as I said, I genuinely can’t think of someone from League 1 who would definitely improve us.

If I was to visit your club on an away trip this season, name one thing I must do in your town? (Can be anything, football-related or otherwise... from visiting a famous sight, to making sure you don’t park your car somewhere, to find a certain drink in a pub or a nice place to eat)

If you’re a lad, I suggest Hooters near the station.

Onto other important matters:

Chris Kiwomya took over the club in February last season, and despite some poor results, do you think he is the right man for the job?

With the backroom team that has been built this summer and the longer term aim of the club to reduce the age of the playing staff and to bring young players through, yes.

Currently, there is an apparent race row at club, which cost the job of 2 County coaches; do you believe that there is a race problem at the club will this hinder the club before the new season?

Nothing could be further from the truth.  Two ex managers are black, Chris Kiwomya is as is our Chief Scout, Matt Alexander (son of Keith).  Hardly the recruitment strategy of a racist club is it?

Recently your former assistant manager Mick Jones return to the club after 20 years away from the club, are you please to have him back and do you think he will help turn the club fortunes around?

Yes I do.  Mick is experienced, has roots with County and has already injected a great deal of enthusiasm and believe back into the club.

And now onto the really important stuff:

Who do you think will be the top 6 at the end of the season?

1.                   Wolves
2.                   Brentford
3.                   Peterborough United
4.                   Bristol City
5.                   Sheffield United
6.                   Gillingham

Who do you think will go down to League 2?

Walsall, Coventry, Shrewsbury, Oldham.

And finally, in all honesty, where do you think you will finish this season?

9th.

Over the next few days, more fans from clubs in League One will be given their chance to speak out on the new season which begins soon.

League One 2013-14 Preview from the fans, Part 1: Peterborough and Bradford

Evening all,

Well it only seems like yesterday that Yeovil defeated Brentford to close the 2012-13 League One season - well 56 days to be exact.

Today we begin with two clubs who are new to the division after relegation and promotion from the league above and below League One. I'm talking about Bradford City and Peterborough United:

BRADFORD CITY

Name:   Matthew Parsons

Occupation away from supporting your club:

Student

How long have you been a supporter of Bradford City and how did you start supporting them?

4 Years. I started supporting them because they ran a promotion in the 2010-2011 seasons where you could go watch them against Stockport County for only £1 and I’ve been going to the odd game in the 2011-2012 season, then I bought a flexi card in the 2012-2013 season where it was only £50 and you paid half price on the gate.

Let’s get this ball rolling:

What would be your Dream season?

If we got a place in the league 1 play-offs

And what will make it a Nightmare season for you?

If Nahki Wells left in the January transfer window, or Gary Jones or one of our star players go a season ending injury.

Our own fans think our team is…

Great because most of our team are young, except Gary Jones who’s aged 36

Other teams’ fans think our team is…

OK

The new season:

How has Pre-Season been for you this time around?
Can’t wait until the 1st pre-season friendly as we have a few games against sides from Yorkshire including Doncaster Rovers which will be a great test to our squad.

Have you got the right manager and how popular is he?

I think we have got the right manager as he has good tactics and he is an experienced manager as he has been a manager for a number of years. And he is very popular because at every home game we have a chant about him and it goes Parkinson’s Bradford Army……

Are there any new signings that you are excited about?

We haven’t made any signings yet but we are talking to players and we are waiting to hear from them as most of them are on holiday.

Name the player that you would happily drive to his next club (and pay for the taxi as well)...

N/A

Name an opposition player you despise...

Clayton Donaldson from Brentford, He’s a Bradford lad but most city fans don’t like him. He played against us in the FA Cup in the 2012/2013 season.

Name an opposition player you would love to have at your club?

Dave Kitson from Sheffield United, as he’s been released from them

If I was to visit your club on an away trip this season, name one thing I must do in your town? (Can be anything, football-related or otherwise... from visiting a famous sight, to making sure you don’t park your car somewhere, to find a certain drink in a pub or a nice place to eat)

Visit the Bradford City fire memorial which is at Valley Parade, behind the Co-Op stand.

Onto other important matters:

After a League Cup Final appearance and a Playoff Final win, how important is it that you keep the momentum at the club for the new season?

Keep the same squad or maybe let 1 or 2 players leave who are surplus to requirements. And give long-term contracts to Carl McHugh, Nahki Wells, James Meredith, Kyel Reid, Zavon Hines, Nathan Doyle, Stephen Darby, and Jon McLaughlin.

How does it feel to be back in League One for the first time since 2007?

Great to be back into League 1 because there’s some good away ground I want to visit like Wolves, Coventry and Sheffield United. And hopefully there will be a big crowd when they visit Valley Parade which will mean more money for the club because there’s a large attendance.

Nakhi Wells turned down a move to a Championship side this summer, is it a good move for him to stay at Bradford?

Yes it’s good because he’s a young lad as he’s only 22. He’s still developing and he has 2 more years to go on his contract. If he does leave it will be at the end of the 2013/2014 season and hopefully we will get more money for him. And he’s a fans favourite.

And now onto the really important stuff:

Who do you think will be the top 6 at the end of the season?

1. Wolves
2. Sheffield United
3. Peterborough
4. Coventry
5. Bristol City
6. Bradford City

Who do you think will go down to League 2?

Oldham, Stevenage, Tranmere, Walsall

And finally, in all honesty, where do you think you will finish this season?

6th or 7th or 8th but in the top 10

PETERBOROUGH UNITED

Name:    Kelly Green

Occupation away from supporting your club:   Student

How long have you been a supporter of Peterborough and how did you start supporting them?

I begged my Dad to take me along 14 years ago, and have been following home and away ever since.

Let’s get this ball rolling:

What would be your Dream season?
Winning the league. We haven’t been crowned chapions of any league since 1974 so I’d love to see us lifting the trophy at London Road on the last day of the season.

And what will make it a Nightmare season for you?

I think anything but promotion will be a disaster. No disrespect to any teams at this level but now we’ve experienced the high life of the Championship  we want to head straight back there. Luckily we’ve only lost Dwight Gayle from last season as the squad have been promised we’ll bounce straight back up, but many players have made it clear that if that doesn’t happen they’ll walk – which will only result in a downwards spiral for Peterborough United.

Our own fans think our team is…

Creating history. No Posh team has ever been as successful as the one that Darragh MacAnthony and Darren Ferguson have created, and it keeps getting stronger and stronger. Be it the players we sign or the results we pull off, things are on the up and there’s real potential to transform the side into a successful Championship side.

Other teams’ fans think our team is…

Tin pot. Everyone thinks we’re playing out of our depth, but we’ve proved with our dogged determination that we deserve to be a successful side.

The new season:

How has Pre-Season been for you this time around?

What’s surprised fans the most is the amount of players who have showed real potential in pre-season, particularly forgotten transfer listed players like Danny Kearns and Nicky Ajose. Then there’s a fresh batch of youth products who have come onto the scene determined to battle for a place in the squad. On paper we have two strong starting 11’s so it’s all looks very promising. And of course results mean nothing, but if you’re going to look at them you’ll see we’re better than a relegated Premier League side but worse than a promoted Conference side.

Have you got the right manager and how popular is he?

For this level yes. Darren Ferguson has taken us out of League One twice at the first time of asking so there’s great expectation that he will do it again. Most importantly Ferguson has found a system that works for him and sticks to it, buying unknown gems and developing them into stars, something that fans, and players alike, respect him for.

Are there any new signings that you are excited about?

At the time of writing this we’ve only signed Jack Payne, but he is definitely someone to get excited about. Payne arrived at the club on loan from Gillingham in January and impressed from the off. Although that now means there’s plenty of pressure on him to be a success again this season.

Name the player that you would happily drive to his next club (and pay for the taxi as well)...

Tyrone Barnett. I feel horrible saying it but to me this guy is useless and no one wants him here, not even the chairman. This is someone we reportedly spent over £1million on, our record signing, and in return we’ve had 14 appearances and one goal.

Name an opposition player you despise...

Sam Baldock. Posh fans have hated Baldock since he turned us down claiming a move to Peterborough ‘didn’t excite him’ now he loves to wind us up every time we face him. He’s one of those cocky players you just want to smack.

Name an opposition player you would love to have at your club?

It will never happen but a player I think would fit into our system perfectly is Millwall’s Josh Wright. The creative midfielder has a great ping on him and would be the perfect replacement for George Boyd.

If I was to visit your club on an away trip this season, name one thing I must do in your town? (Can be anything, football-related or otherwise... from visiting a famous sight, to making sure you don’t park your car somewhere, to find a certain drink in a pub or a nice place to eat)

Peterborough will offer you a proper away day, with plenty of pubs all accommodating away fans. I recommend you all get here early and head to Charters, a pub on a boat.

Onto other important matters:

You were unfortunately relegated on the last day of the Championship season, is it important for you to bounce back straight away?

Definitely. Going into the last day no one honestly expected we would be relegated so it was a real disaster. The only good thing to come from it is everyone’s determination to bounce straight back. We were on our best run in history in The Championship so it’s vital that we return straight away to continue building. No pressure!

Manger Darren Ferguson managed to keep his job despite the relegation; do you think he is the right man to take you back up to the Championship?

He’s definitely the right man to get us back but it could be argued that he doesn’t have what it takes to keep us up. I respect Fergie for the way he has come to the club with no managerial experience and made an immediate impact but he does struggle with vital games. However he has plenty of experience in this league so everyone will expect him to take us up again.

Dwight Gayle was a revelation in the Championship for you last season; will he be better in League One?
Not now he’s in the Premier League ;)

And now onto the really important stuff:

Who do you think will be the top 6 at the end of the season?

Wolves,
Posh,
Sheffield United,
Bristol City,
Brentford,
Gillingham.

Who do you think will go down to League 2?

Stevenage, Shrewsbury, Oldham, Colchester.

And finally, in all honesty, where do you think you will finish this season?

2012-13: A season to remember for Gillingham FC

Evening all,

Well, that season for Gillingham was a complete turn up for the books. No one expected this – not even the biggest fan within the club but still it is really historic to see a club you supported for a long time finally get a league title – their first for 49 years – and to play football at times were ten times better than last season and the season before.

And even as a reporter covering over 25 games of the 46 league season, for me the standard of football played by Gillingham at times were very enjoyable to watch. Despite a few setbacks against teams which they should have easily beaten, the team always bounced back the following game.

But where do you start as you look back on a brilliant season. For me it was simple, at the newsroom for BBC South East Today. And it was here for me the season started with the appointment of the manager Martin Allen.  I was there on a day placement to get some more newsroom experience, but I did bring a story that there will be a new Gillingham manager within the next day or so. So I told Neil Bell – the sports reporter for the BBC SE – that it would be one from three candidates. One of them was Martin Allen. But he wasn't my first choice as I thought that Steve Tilson would get the job over Allen because of his experience of getting teams promoted from League 2. Oddly enough the day after my placement the news broke that Martin Allen got the job, I was a little bit annoyed that it didn't happen whilst I was there.

But I did have some reservations about the appointment as he didn't have the experience of managing a team who had the potential to be in the hunt for the playoffs or even promotion for the season ahead. But as a fan, I was willing to give him a chance and back him for the start of the season. But after the first game against Bradford which we demolished the 3-1, I was beginning to think that we could do some real damage to teams in this division.  And the team continued to impress with hard earned away victories over Wycombe Barnet and Dagenham and Redbridge and after the Chesterfield draw in only our second home game we were top of the league table. Something we not give up until the defeat at home to Port Vale.

After the Chesterfield game there was a lot of confidence and quality within the team. Martin Allen did bring in players who were easily capable of getting Gillingham promoted, two of my favourite signings of the season stood out over the rest of the squad. Defender Adam Barrett was a easily a better defender than the likes of Gary Richards and sadly Simon King but his presence in the back line sorted out the defence and he didn't even panic not once all season. And the other player is Deon Burton, to score the caliber of goals he did over the season at the age of 36?! Well what can you say, age and form are irrelevant in this league but the quality he brought to the team in this league will definitely get you either promoted or champions. An example of this was his goal against Morecambe in the last minute in front of the rainham end. The way he took just one magnificent touch of his right foot and belted the ball pass the goalkeeper with his other foot was just brilliant to watch and report on.

As the season progressed they were a lot of stern challengers who played very well against us when we were top of the league. Noticeable teams were Fleetwood Town, Exeter City and Cheltenham Town. They all came to our place and tried to play us off the park but despite Gillingham trying to make a game of it, they either attempted to play us off the park or stop us from getting the ball and hit us on the counter attack. I know that despite not getting the results at home I still thought and believed that we will get the eventual results to get either promoted or even possibly champions. But the Port Vale smash and grad raid done on us in early January where Tom Pope and Lee Hughes and despite getting back into the game and possibly having a shout for a hard earned draw but Vale held out to go top of the league.

But they didn't last long at the top as discontent run though the Vale side, Martin Allen’s side rallied with some good results in February including beating much fancied Chesterfield and going on a unbeaten run in March which included 3 away draws in 7 days. Many Gills fans clocked up over 800 mile round trips that week and the team responded with some gritty and determined away draws which helped Gillingham reclaim the top spot in the League with over a month to go.

My favourite result of the year was the Bank Holiday Monday victory over the fat man and his Rotherham United team. It was the result which could get us one foot into League one and set ourselves up for the possible mother of all parties the following Saturday against Torquay. Deon Burton scored the only goal of the game in front of a packed rainham end and by the final whistle the players knew how much of a big game it was for them and the win they got was helped the gills get over the line and after that it was a foregone conclusion that the right results will help get the club promoted.

The next game was that result against struggling Torquay and they were seen off after Danny Kedwell hit a beautiful cross shot which their goalkeeper had no chance of saving. As the full time whistle went, the whole crowd erupted with cheers which I don’t think I will never forget. Gillingham has never been a promoted in front of their home crowd before the game and the atmosphere at the ground after the full time whistle was deafening. It continued into the blues bar after the final whistle where some of the players and Martin Allen joined in the celebration – whilst covering me in champagne as I tried to join in as well.  It was a jolly evening to spend with fellow supporters and there were a lot of sore heads the follow morning.

Me and Chay celebrating the Gills going up!

It was then a case of wrapping up the clubs first title in 49 years. First up was a tricky away to Cheltenham Town. But despite taking over 1400 to Cheltenham, the title party was put on hold only for a week as the Gills lost 1-0. But spirits were not dampened on the journey back as we had the final home game of the season to win the title and of we did it, we would get the trophy after the game as well. On the day of the AFC Wimbledon game, the atmosphere inside the ground was buzzing, it was a near sell out and even the AFC Wimbledon fans got involved as well, as their side were at the other end of the table, fighting against relegation.  The game was played in bright sunshine and Gillingham raced into a 2-0 lead and at half time we sensed something special was going to happen today and we know that we were winning the title. Despite throwing away the lead and earning a 2-2 draw, we knew it was enough to clinch the league title for the first time since 1964. The atmosphere at the final whistle where the majority of the fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate was a joyous occasion for all Gillingham fans, and definitely one I shall remember for my lifetime. When we got the trophy, there were a lot of celebrations both in the stands and in the pub afterwards. Sadly no players came down this time but they were doing their own celebrations at the ground.

Then things moved to the final game of the year a trip to Burton Albion and a chance for the youngsters to get a chance to shine before we all disperse from the ground and come back in mid July for the usual pre season fixtures of going to small non league grounds in Kent to see that champions in action again. Some of them did shine especially Nathan Nyafli who scored a well taken goal – his first for the club, and on that note our 3 year journey in League Two has finally come to a close. Despite failing to do it on the past two occasions with Hessenthaler at the helm, this had to be the season we needed to get out of this league and get promoted. And with thanks to the players and Martin Allen, he has achieved this on his first attempt, well done him.

So, what’s next for us then in League one, well for the Gills some great away trips to the likes of former premier league side Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, the chance of playing good League One sides like the franchise from Milton Keynes and Stevenage, the chance to renew old rivalries with Preston North End and Colchester United, and of course the distinct probability of playing against the scum of Swindon Town in front of a massive crowd at the Priestfield Stadium on a cold Tuesday night in February.
For me there’s the chance of meeting fellow journalists I know who support teams in this league and catching up with them and there’s the chance of returning to former stumping grounds like Nottingham and Bristol and the possible frequent trips to Birmingham to be used as a stopover on trips to play against sides from the midlands.

To end all I simply need to say that WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

And Roll On League One....

Memories of BBC TV Centre

Evening all.

I do feel sad and uneasy writing about something which I feel of what I feel is a iconic building of modern day Britain and today mark its last major day in my life before getting redesigned and remade for a 21st century Britain.

Its not a building near to where I live or to have worked in but for at least 3 years of my life when I was travelling past the building on the central line for a busy day at Thames Valley University in Ealing.

I am talking about the iconic BBC Television Centre in London. As today marks the last network news programme to be broadcasted from the site before all news operations move to Broadcasting House in the Centre of London.

Since I started on my journey of working in the media, I initially thought the pinnacle job for me to work was working for the BBC and the seeing the building on my to and from University during 2000 to 2003 gave me the buzz and the inspiration to say to myself "one day, you will be working from a place like this".

When I see this building every day I went past it, I often remembered some of my favourite and memorable recordings from there. For example I still remember shows which I watched on my TV when I was growing up; Like and Kicking was a favourite of mine – and I remember the programme featuring two of my friends being filmed for a feature about how good Sittingbourne is a place to live.

As a reporter, some of the BBC News features and programmes from the centre had a major influence of me becoming a reporter. Iconic bulletins and news items like the famine report in Ethiopia in 1984 – which kicked off the Live Aid fundraising – and Matt Frei’s news piece about poverty in Japan are both perfect examples of how a story should be told to a news viewer.

One of my memorable broadcasts was the Invasion of the news studio TC 7 in 1988. It was when the 6 o’clock news was invaded by two lesbian protestors over clause 28 of the ‘then’ local government Bill - the lack of promotion of homosexuality. I remember that from the start of the programme things did not look right and after a small commotion, things died down the news continued to be broadcasted. Sue Lawley news reading from this was so professional it set an example of how to be a excellent newsreader and it was to happen again today, I don’t think that many newsreaders can match what Sue did in that in that news studio.

In 2002, I also did have the opportunity to go and see a programme being recorded of 'Question of Sport' with the recording taking place I think it was TC 3. The experience of the day as a member of the studio audience was very interesting and an enjoyable experience, when you get the opportunity to walk around such a building, your mind gets taken back to what the building must have been like in its hay day of the Seventies and the Eighties.

Also when the Underground wasn’t working past the White City station, I also often walked past the building which hosted the BBC Network newsroom. I wish I had the opportunity to work there just for one day as a NJ just so that I can get the feeling of what it was like to work in a memorable building.

I do have to admit; nowadays the building is too big for a 'slimmed-down' version of the BBC. Especially with most of the work coming from the Media city complex in Salford and New Broadcasting House in the centre of London, at the time the building was going to be sold, I felt that the building should have been preserved in one way – shape or form.

So I was happy to heat that the building will e renovated and 3 of the studios will stay open, and after seeing the plans for the site, I am actually impressed of how it will look once it is finished in 2014.

In fairness I would have jumped at the chance to work in such a building and the opportunity to work and to be in the studio audience there will still be there once it has reopened but the look and the feel of the place will not be the same compared to the old building which so many memories I will have with me for the rest of my life.

RIP BBC Television Centre 1960 - 2013 - you will never be forgotten.
